The Jasper Tramway

Taking the Jasper Tramway to the top of The Whistlers is a great way to get a bird’s eye view of the town of Jasper and its surroundings. On a clear day, the views of the town below, the colourful lakes and mountain ranges (including the snow-capped peak of Mt. Robson, the highest point in the Canadian Rockies) are absolutely spectacular!

Patterns in the mud

On a hike to the Baird Glacier in southeastern Alaska, I stumbled upon a series of stunning patterns in the mud flats at the foot of the glacier. Some of them resemble photos taken of the earth from outer space. I look at them and I see mountain chains, glaciers, volcanoes and river deltas. What do you see?

Read the accompanying post: “The Hike to Baird Glacier“.

EMP Museum in Seattle

The EMP (Experience Music Project) Museum in Seattle is a futuristic-looking building with exhibitions on popular music and science fiction. The complex, designed by Frank Gehry, is adjacent to the Space Needle and features a curvy, shiny sheet-metal exterior, similar to the architect’s other famous designs such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

Fish and crabs at Pike Place Market Seattle

The Pike Place Market is one of Seattle‘s main attractions. In addition to a myriad of stalls selling seafood and farmers’ produce, there are also little shops selling all sorts of souvenirs and clothing. Spot the fish with the cool shades in the photo below!

Fresh dungeness crab on the Wilderness Discoverer

On my recent cruise with the Wilderness Discoverer through Alaska’s Inside Passage, we were treated to fresh dungeness crab. The ship’s kitchen staff cleaned the crabs on the pier in Wrangell and we later had them for dinner on board. The huge chunks of fresh crab meat were a culinary highlight of the cruise.
