Chocolate delights in Lucca

Lucca is a lovely historic town in northern Tuscany, Italy. Famous for its Renaissance architecture, including its magnificent Cathedral and the Piazza Anfiteatro, Lucca is also home to more edible delights like chocolates. :-)

Sierra Mayor Iberian suckling pig

El Celler de Can Roca was recently voted as the second best restaurant in the world. Situated in the town of Girona, Catalonia, the restaurant is led by the three Roca brothers. The highlight of my meal there was undoubtedly the Sierra Mayor Iberian suckling pig, with its wafer-thin crispy skin and tender meat underneath. Absolutely sublime!

Husky-sledding in Lapland

One of the most popular activities in Finnish Lapland is a trek on a husky-sled. It’s in my opinion the best way to enjoy the stunning winter landscapes, from the frozen lakes to the snowy forests. And the huskies are simply beautiful!

On the frozen canals of Amsterdam

It doesn’t happen very often that the canals of Amsterdam freeze up completely. This winter, a prolonged period of sub-zero temperatures created an ice floor that was sufficiently thick for everyone to go ice-skating or for a canal stroll. There were speed-skating competitions, festivals and even a classical concert (by a local orchestra) on the frozen canals! In the evenings, Amsterdammers brought out tables and chairs and organised dinners and parties on the ice! It certainly was a memorable winter!

Haria – white town in the valley of a thousand palms

Haria is a small town on the island of Lanzarote. Located in the northeastern corner of the island, Haria is famous for its whitewashed houses and its Saturday morning markets. The white buildings form a stunning contrast with the surrounding barren, hilly landscape. There’s also a very interesting story about why there are so many palm trees in and around Haria.

Read the accompanying post: ‘ Ten things to do and see in Lanzarote‘.
