San rock art in South Africa

South Africa has one of the largest collections of rock art in the world with close to 20,000 sites scattered throughout various provinces. The rock art was painted on cave walls or mountain slopes by the San Bushmen and depict scenes of wanderers, hunters and animals as well as tribal rituals. The largest collection of San rock sites, dating from thousands of years ago, can be found in the Drakensberg region. Smaller sites can also be found in the Cederberg region (where the pictures below were taken) just north of Cape Town.

Inukshuk at English Bay, Vancouver

The Inukshuk is an ancient symbol of the Inuit and is traditionally used as a landmark and navigational aid. The inukshuk was also used as the logo of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. This granite inukshuk stands at the edge of English Bay in Vancouver.

Patterns in the mud

On a hike to the Baird Glacier in southeastern Alaska, I stumbled upon a series of stunning patterns in the mud flats at the foot of the glacier. Some of them resemble photos taken of the earth from outer space. I look at them and I see mountain chains, glaciers, volcanoes and river deltas. What do you see?

Tower of suitcases at Santiago airport

One of the most striking artworks at the international airport in Santiago, Chile, is this tower of suitcases. This picture was taken before the 2010 earthquake which damaged parts of the terminal building but my guess is, this tower of suitcases is still standing tall!
